The High Potential Scheme (HPS) is an inclusive, accelerated talent development programme to support those aiming for executive-level management roles.
HPS supports health and social care colleagues to gain exposure to different ways of working, build networks across organisations and systems, and learn from diverse practices to better serve our local populations.
Our 12-month programme offers personalised, practical development in strategic project management, critical thinking and inclusive leadership, executive mentoring and placement or shadowing opportunities.
What you can expect
The High Potential Scheme is a 12-month accelerated learning programme designed to provide a range of learning opportuntes, experiences and coaching to support your development.
The HPS Applicant Pack (linked below) outlines the time comitment, activites and milestones in detail, however in summary participants will:
- Have access to cross-sector experience so that you develop a great breadth of knowledge and understanding of Health and Care leadership.
- Work with a dedicated Career Guide to gain a deep insight into your leadership potential and career development needs. You will use this information to create a career development plan.
- Use your career development plan to identify the skills, behaviours and experiences you need to develop for the next step in your career and beyond.
- With the help of your Career Guide, Executive Mentor and a Sponsor, build a programme of different experiences which will help you achieve your personal development goals. These will include projects, stretch assignments and work placements or role changes.
- Harness the skills required to create an inclusive and compassionate culture across Health and Care.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible you must be:
- In a Health and Care-funded role, based within Birmingham, Black Country or Solihull (BBCS) cluster. This means if you work in the NHS (Primary or Secondary Care), the Voluntary or Charity sectors or in Adult or Child Care in Local Authorities.
- A middle level leader (Agenda for Change bands 8a-c, or equivalent in other pay structures, clinical or non-clinical, salary typically in the range of £45,000 to £87,000 pro rata).
- Interested in progressing your career to senior leadership roles, for example, board or governing body level within the next 5-8 years.
- Ready and willing to learn and develop your leadership skills and behaviours.
- Able to demonstrate your compassionate and inclusive leadership values and style.

Please read the HPS Applicant Pack and frequently asked questions (download below) carefully to make sure you fully understand what is involved and the expectations on you and your time.
You will need to complete the the online application form, which available via High Potential Scheme Application Form.
As part of the application process, both you and your Sponsor will need to sign a copy of the High Potential Scheme Terms and Conditions. All applications will be reviewed to ensure the required criteria are met. Should your application be approved to progress to the next stage, you will be invited to complete a situational judgement test.
