Staff Mental Health Hub square - cleaners and porters.jpgSupport for your mental health from our Staff Mental Health Hub

If you work in the NHS or social care services in Birmingham and Solihull, you can access free psychological support for stress, anxiety and depression, and other common mental health difficulties, from the BSol Staff Mental Health Hub. You may feel that you shouldn’t reach out for help or that it isn’t culturally acceptable, or that somehow it would affect your work situation. However, the BSol Staff Mental Health Hub is completely independent from your employer and does not disclose information to employers unless you ask us to.

Our Staff Mental Health Hub is open for self-referrals for all Birmingham and Solihull health and social care staff seeking help for the emotional and psychological support. The service is open for everyone in the NHS and social care in Birmingham and Solihull, regardless of job grade, job role or cultural background.

Following referral, support offered to the staff member can include:

  • Rapid and easy access to specialist psychological assessment
  • Advice, consultation and onward referral where appropriate
  • Access to brief evidence based psychological interventions within the Hub, where appropriate

You can self-refer to the service using this form and emailing it to bsmhft.staffmhhub@nhs.net. Alternatively, you can email us with your phone number and a convenient date and time for a call, and a member of our team will contact you to complete the self-referral form over the phone.

A referral can also be made by calling 0121 301 1470 and leaving a voicemail with your name, contact details, home address, date of birth, and, if possible, a brief summary of the reasons for your referral.

You will then be contacted to arrange an assessment appointment.

Please note that the Staff Mental Health Hub uses a confidential and separate care records information system, which can only be accessed by the Staff Mental Health Hub Team.

Men can face unique challenges when it comes to talking about and accessing mental health support. Stigma, cultural expectations, and pressures to appear “strong” can sometimes make it harder to ask for help.

Watch our Webinar: “Supporting Men’s Mental Health in the Workplace”

In this webinar, we explore:

  • Why men’s mental health is important.
  • Barriers that might stop men from reaching out.
  • Signs it might be time to seek support.
  • Strategies for self-care and resilience.
  • How we can all help break the stigma.
  • What support is available from the Staff Mental Health Hub.

If a staff member needs mental health support, please encourage them to refer themselves directly to the Staff Mental Health Hub. We see much better engagement and outcomes when individuals take that first step on their own. For this reason, we ask that managers and service leads signpost staff to our service rather than making referrals on their behalf.

Compassionate leadership

Compassionate leadership is an approach that promotes self-care, supports wellbeing, and creates a positive, psychologically safe workplace culture. It goes beyond managing tasks to fostering an environment where people feel valued, understood, and supported. Leaders who embody compassion build trust, encourage open communication, and help teams to thrive even during challenging times.

You can learn more about compassionate leadership here.
